How to remove the smell of smoke
There are several items you can use to remove the smell of campfires from your clothes, and they are all things you’re likely to have in your home. These methods use steaming or soaking with items such as vinegar or baking powder to help neutralize the smell.
Steaming with Vinegar Method
To clean your cloth using this method you’ll need four cups of white vinegar. You’ll also need a bath with a cloth hanger or rail above it from which to hang your clothes.
First, fill up your bathtub with hot water and add the white vinegar into the water. This will create a vapor as the steam rises that will get rid of the smell of smoke from your clothes as they hang above.
It would help if you hung your clothes as close as possible to the hot water, as this will allow them to absorb the steam. Leave your clothes hanging in the bathroom until the water cools and then hang them outside to dry. Putting your clothes outside in the fresh air and sunshine will freshen them up as they dry.
Add Baking Soda to Your Wash
Baking soda is a well known, environmentally friendly cleaning product. But did you know that you can also use it to freshen up your clothes? Baking powder can be used to remove strong odors from clothing and is effective at removing the smell of campfires.
All you need to carry out this method is some baking soda, a bathtub or bucket, and a washing machine and detergent. You should first soak your clothing in the bucket or the bath, depending on how bulky your clothing is. Soak in warm water, and add half a cup of baking soda, leave for a few hours.
Once you’ve soaked your clothes, you can then transfer them to the washing machine and wash them on your normal setting using some detergent. If possible, hang your clothes up outside to dry as this will freshen them up.
Use Citrus Fruit
Citrus fruits such as limes or lemons can be used to remove unwanted smoke from your clothes. For this method, you’ll need to add citrus juice to some water and spray it onto your clothes with a spray bottle.
To do this, squeeze the lemon or lime and add the juice to warm water. You should use eight parts of water and one part of lemon juice. Put this concoction into a spray bottle and use it to spray any clothes which smell like smoke.
As with the other methods, you can hang your clothes outside in the fresh air and sunshine.
These three methods are all very effective at removing the smell of campfires from your clothing. It’s up to you which method you’d rather try. The method you choose is likely to depend on which products you have at home.
Many people end up throwing away their hiking gear if it smells strongly of smoke, but as you can see, there’s no need. All it takes is some household products, and you’ll have your clothes freshened up in no time.
Whichever method you choose, it’s a good idea to hang your clothes outside where they can benefit from fresh air and sunshine to help freshen them up. Sunshine has the added benefit of killing germs, so your clothes will be extra fresh and clean.
These methods are all great, and you’ll be able to continue to enjoy the campfire experience without worrying that your camping gear is getting ruined in the process.
